Who We Are

Women's Mountain Passages began in 1999 as an outdoor program for women who

had experienced violence. As our ten year anniversary approaches, we have begun to reflect on what it means for our rural community in the northern Sierra to have a place for renewal, healing and empowerment. We have had great community support and increased awareness for women's issues having produced Vagina Monologues, sponsored Luna Fest, and created Truth Telling, an artistic project for survivors, in addition to our ongoing programming.

Initially, a planning grant from the California Endowment helped Passages expand its mission to work with women and youth to connect with their strengths so they may improve their lives and facilitate social change in their communities through leadership development, advocacy, youth programs and support networks. And now with support from state, local and federal grants, we are a self-supporting non-profit.

Since its inception, staffing has grown from one un-paid coordinator to 4 paid staff members; and the budget has expanded from $10,000 annually to over $150,000 annually with funding provided by federal, state and local agencies, as well as private foundations. Partnerships with non-profits, local businesses, county agencies, volunteers and diverse funders have helped develop, adapt and implement Women's Mountain Passages' vision.
